A Note On Anti-Oppression in Therapy

Tree Logo -- Anti-oppressive therapy and healing

Therapy does not exist in a vacuum. We are always in relationship with the cultural and historical contexts that we are born into and surrounded by. These contexts do not disappear in a therapy session. As a therapist, I strive to be particularly aware of how certain societal power dynamics and biases could influence the ways we are experiencing one another.

I do not start from any assumptions or preferences about so called "normal" ways of being. I embrace queerness as beautiful, expansive, and in need of protection against the chronic waves of hate around us. I affirm neurodivergence as a worthy and needed difference in the world. I reject any models of "healing" which seek to shame neurodivergent minds into neurotypical ways of being in the world. I challenge the ableism that says our worth is determined by how well we conform to one model of "productive".

I acknowledge the racism we are steeped in and surrounded by, including the racism I have been raised and educated through. I strive to be actively anti-racist, to de-centre whiteness, and to be aware and responsible for potential cultural appropriations related to the modalities I work with.

I strive to keep an awareness of the systemic privileges I hold, especially in my position as a therapist.

I strive to remain open to any feedback I might receive, especially about ways I may have caused harm or neglected to be sufficiently aware of power dynamics impacting our therapeutic relationship.

I honour whatever rage you may hold about injustices or systemic harm that you experience. There is so much hate around us. Rage is a force which keeps the alarm ringing to say that we do not accept these oppressions. We do not accept hate. I honour this rage as a form of love.
